Chartered engineer is a professional qualification in Engineering (not a degree) offered by professional associations with a Royal Charter from the British monarchy, similar to the Professional Engineer in other countries.

European countries
Many European countries have similar qualifications (e.g. EurIng) which are considered, under European law, to be equivalent.
In UK
In the UK, the qualification is controlled by the Engineering Council UK and is awarded through its member societies.
In Australia
In Australia, the Institution of Engineers, Australia controls the qualification, although it is referred to as a Chartered Professional Engineer. A chartered engineer is allowed to use the post-nominal letters CEng.
