IPENZ, the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand, can trace its history back to 1912, the founding of the Institute of Local Government Engineers of New Zealand. Civil engineers joined in 1914.
With over 7,000 members, it jointly inaugurated the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards in 2005.
